Weight Loss Diet for the “Real World” – Tip #4

Cucumbers. Yes, cucumbers not only help us lose weight, they are a tasty component of a healthy lifestyle. Cucumbers are the best natural diuretic out there (even better than watermelon). That means eating cucumbers will helps us get rid of all that puffiness and “water weight” that we get from eating processed food. So, if it’s been a bad day, and you ran for a burger during your 10 minute lunch break, ate it quickly before the next meeting started and now feel “yucky” –  eat a cucumber. In the summer I like to eat the little, bitter pickling cukes This time of the year I prefer the long, skinny English cucumbers wrapped in plastic over the larger, everyday cukes.  To me, they have more flavor and they are not waxed, so I can eat skin and all. Cucumbers are also low-calorie, so go ahead and eat a whole one, or even two ! And I find that cucumbers soothe my late afternoon desire to have something crunchy. Don’t cover them with salt though – salt actually promotes weight gain – not our goal here. If you must have a little salt, make it VERY little, just a light touch. Or enjoy cucumber the way my grandmother always served them, sliced into a bowl of apple cider vinegar.

Here are some other benefits of cucumbers:

  • Potassium rich – help regulate blood pressure
  • Help reduce kidney, bladder, liver and pancreas disease
  • Reduce inflammation, which means they are heart healthy, and good for anyone suffering from arthritis or migraines
  • Flush toxins out of the system thus soothing symptoms of gout and gall bladder disease
  • Refreshing!
