Weight Loss Diet for the Real World – Tip #9

One of the worse things about trying to lose weight? We end up thinking about food all day! About food we can’t have, or shouldn’t have. So we start every morning with a purpose – today is the day I start to lose weight. We go all day nibbling at lettuce and rice cakes. By evening – we eat everything in sight that’s not nailed down. It’s sad, but oh so true. So tip # 9 is – Don’t Get Too Hungry.

It may be counter-intuitive, but the best way to lose weight and get healthy is to eat. And I don’t mean just eat three meals a day (who came up with that plan anyway?). Eat a sensible breakfast, have a mid-morning snack, eat a sensible lunch, have a mid-afternoon snack, eat a sensible dinner, have a before bedtime snack. The trick is to have the correct snack. No, not a candy bar or chips from the vending machine – both of which are empty calories. The best snacks combine a little protein with a little bit of carbs. Here are some that work especially well for me:

  • A few (3 or 4) crackers with peanut butter,
  • Peanut butter and apple wedges
  • A piece of cheese and an orange
  • A handful of walnuts a few unsalted pretzels
  • Plain low-fat yogurt and some berries
  • A rice cake spread with Nutella
  • Dry roasted soy nuts and a piece of fruit
  • A protein type bar (my favorites are Kardea bars, which are chewy, tasty, filling and heart healthy too). See my review here.

Trying to lose weight is a frustrating experience for most of us – I know it certainly is for me. So why would we torture ourselves by going all day without eating? So don’t get too hungry. Oh look – it’s time for my snack.

  1. Absolutely. Being hungry of course is the biggest cause of binge eating.

Having snacks around is always key to surviving those hunger flashes.

I just grab a string cheese when hungry although doing Atkin’s keeps the hunger bug away most of the time.

I’ve tried many snacks but if they taste too good, then I end up eating too much. I used to use wasabi peas and wasabi almonds but it was simply too hard to keep my portions under control. I like the string cheese but I don’t love it.

    Great tips.

Losing over 100 pounds is a major commitment. Congratulations on your success. You raise an excellent point – sometimes eating something “boring”, that doesn’t tickle our taste buds too much, is the best path to take. Thanks for the tip!
